BRENTON ZHANG
Cello
Praised by the Berkshire Edge for his “nuanced vibratos and subtly shifting dynamics,” cellist Brenton Zhang has performed in various capacities at numerous prestigious venues across the nation and worldwide. Since 2016, he has been principal cellist of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Symphonic Orchestra and the Winter Park High School Philharmonic Orchestra. Most recently, he served as a fellow and principal cellist at the 2019 National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute. Following his solo debut with orchestra at the age of 14, Brenton has been a winner of the Philadelphia International Music Festival Concerto Competition, the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, and the Florida Federation of Music Clubs Senior Cello Concerto Competition; additionally, he was the first recipient of the Richard Lorleberg Memorial Cello Award in 5 years. In both 2017 and 2018, he was the only cellist selected from the state of Florida to participate in the NAfME All-National Symphony Orchestra, as well as the top-ranking cellist in the MTNA Florida Senior Strings Competition. Brenton, an alumnus of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, began his cello studies at the age of eight, and he currently studies privately with David Bjella. His past teachers include Mihail Jojatu of the Boston Symphony, Eugena Chang of the National Symphony Orchestra, Hyun-Ji Kwon, Si-Yan Li, Greg Beaver, and Tracy Sands.
